Australia Wine Regions

Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits stocks a wide-ranging selection of affordable wines, including the finest French, Italian and American wines and award-winning wines from around the globe.

Australia continues to achieve international recognition for the unique qualities and characters of its varied wine regions. Most of the quality wine production takes place in four of the country’s six states. Here’s our definitive guide to those Australian white grape-growing regions:

South Australia: This is the largest wine production region in Australia. Barossa Valley, home to some of the oldest living vineyards in the world, is the most prestigious area. Chardonnay, Semillon, and Riesling are the three most common white grapes planted here. The cool breezes of the Adelaide Hills also produce delightful Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. And high-quality Rieslings come from Clare Valley and Eden Valley.

Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits staff favorites from South Australia include Penfolds Koonunga Hill Chardonnay, with its delicious peach, lemon and pear flavors, and Yellow Tail Pinot Grigio, a Bronze Medal winner at the International Wine & Spirit Competition.

New South Wales: This area, with its capital, Sydney, produces about one-third of Australia’s wine. Excellent Semillon comes from the Lower Hunter Valley, which has a warm, damp climate and heavy soils. Most of the region’s Chardonnay is produced in Mudgee and Orange.

Victoria: Most of Victoria’s 500+ wineries are small. The Yarra Valley is noted for its great Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. Geelong and Mornington Peninsula, two cool maritime regions, produce excellent Chardonnay.

Western Australia: The warm, almost Mediterranean climate of Margaret River, along with its cool ocean breezes and sandy soils, help to produce some of the best Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blends and Chardonnay in the country. But Mount Barker is quickly becoming a hot spot for Chardonnay production, and Great Southern’s specialty is crisp, zesty Riesling.
