About Chardonnay

Best ChardonnayThere is a lot to know about chardonnay, and we hope the following information will help you decide which wine to try next!

Chardonnay is the most planted white wine grape in the world and has an amazing range. It is originally from the Burgundy region of central France and features complex fruit flavors and notes of earth and minerals.

Excellent oaked Chardonnays come from warm-climate regions, such as:

  • Southern and Eastern Australia
  • Napa Valley and Paso Robles, California
  • Mendoza, Argentina
  • Puglia, Italy

Most unoaked Chardonnay is from cooler climate regions, including:

  • Sonoma, California
  • Western Australia
  • Loire and Chablis, France
  • Colchagua and Casablanca Valley, Chile
  • Oregon

Chardonnays can be bright and fresh, full and creamy, or something in between, giving it great versatility with food. The more balanced chardonnays go beautifully with shellfish or pasta. Fruitier varieties are fabulous with chicken and fish.

Buttery chardonnay pairs with buttery foods, like succulent lobster with melted butter.  Oaky chardonnays pair well with smoky grilled foods.  Very crisp, unoaked Chardonnays make a great appetizer wine, and pair well with pates, sushi, oysters, mussels, and clams. Lower acid varieties are perfect for a wide variety of fish dishes, especially lighter, white fleshed fish. And the most complex, rich Chardonnays are wonderful with veal, pork, and chicken.

Chardonnay pairs very well with white-fleshed fish, such as halibut, mahi-mahi and tilapia, as well as with salmon and shellfish, particularly with lobster, fresh boiled crab or mild crab cakes, and scallops. Some of the best chardonnays come from France and California, but look for other fine examples from Italy, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

At Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits, we stock a wide variety of excellent Chardonnays, including Far Niente Chardonnay from Napa Valley, California, which features perfectly aligned citrus and minerality. We also recommend Au Contraire Chardonnay from California’s Russian River Valley paired with mild cheeses, seafood, chicken, or pork.

Tip: Serve your chardonnay COLD; the colder the chardonnay, the better. At room temperature, the intense flavors of this wine have a tendency to overwhelm any food you might be eating.
