Is Rosé a Red or White Wine?

Many people believe rosé is a blend of white and red grapes, but this is not true. In fact, mixing red wine into white wine to give it a pink color is discouraged in most wine growing regions, especially in France, where it is against the law. Color comes from the skin of the grape, not from its flesh.

Rosé is a dry wine that is actually made from black grapes (red wine grapes), and has a flavor profile that resembles red wine. Red grapes are crushed and left to macerate briefly with the red skins for anywhere from a few hours to a few days. The longer the skins are left to sit in the wine, the darker the color of the finished rosé. Then, the juice is strained out and fermented in tanks.

Rosé is not made from a specific grape, and many are blends of multiple grapes. It is generally fresh, acidic and dry (not sweet). While it is made in all corners of the world, when in doubt, look for a rosé from France, particularly one from Provence, the Rhône valley, or the Loire valley, the motherland of traditional, dry rosé.

Rosé should be chilled like white wine, and pairs well with fish, vegetables, chicken, grilled steak, fruit and desserts.

Here are some of the French rosé favorites from the experts at Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits:

Chateau d’Esclans Whispering Angel Rosé – From Provence, this award-winning rosé is crisp and dry and made from a blend of Grenache, Rolle and Cinsaut grapes. You will love the beautiful pink color.

Chateau Minuty “M” Rosé – This crisp, elegant wine, from Saint-Tropez, is highly rated and comes in a pretty nipped-waist Provençal bottle. The winery uses many organic practices in its production, including avoiding pesticides and herbicides.

Moulin de Gassac “Guilhem” Rosé – Soft raspberry-cherry flavors, bright acidity, tiny bubbles on the palate, and a beautiful color make this crisp and dry French rosé from the Languedoc region on the southern coast of France delightfully refreshing.

La Vieille Ferme Rosé – Rated among the top 10 wines from the Rhône valley region with respect to the number of awards it has won, this is a rich and fruity rosé that is beautiful and very aromatic.
