How to Taste Tequila

When shopping, look for tequilas made from 100% blue agave as they make the best choice for a sipping. When tasting, your tequila should be served at room temperature, and each pour should be about 1/2 ounce.

The three styles of tequila are defined by the method and length of the aging process they go through and each has its own unique flavor and aroma characteristics.

Tequila Blanco: Blanco, or silver, tequila is clear and is bottled immediately following distillation. It is quite strong and retains much of the pure blue agave flavor. It is the variety most often used for mixed drinks.

Tequila Reposado: Reposado, or “rested,” tequila rests in barrels for anywhere between two and eleven months. The process produces a pale, mellow spirit that can be sipped or mixed into simple cocktails.

Tequila Añejo: Añejo, or aged, tequila rests for over a year, and takes on an amber color and oaky flavor from the barrels. It features complex and refined flavors that are best enjoyed by sipping.

The Best Tequilas for Sipping

Patrón Añejo: If you’re looking for a tequila that you can enjoy on its own but could also mix into a cocktail, this añejo is the one to choose. It gets its robust flavor from a 12-15 month aging in oak barrels and its subtle sweetness from baked agave.

Don Julio 1942 Añejo: This limited-edition añejo was created to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Don Julio opening his first tequila distillery. Aged in oak barrels for more than a year, is has a natural golden brown color and smooth taste.

Jose Cuervo Reserva De La Familia Extra Anejo: Reserva de la Familia was the world’s first extra-añejo tequila. Distilled from 7 to 12-year-old agave hearts and then matured in both American and French oak barrels for at least 3 years, this is a rich and flavorful Jose Cuervo tequila. Sip it neat or on the rocks and savor the aroma and velvety finish.

Herradura Seleccion Suprema Tequila: This tequila is made with agave harvested exclusively from the Casa Herradura estate. Aged for a minimum of four years in American white oak casks that formerly held Kentucky bourbon, the resulting tequila has aromas of vanilla, cinnamon, and citrus.
