Wine and Steak

One of the most prized cuts of beef, the fillet, also known as the tenderloin, is cut from the loin of the steer. It is extremely tender and low in fat and is well-suited to quick roasting, pan-frying or grilling. Because of its mild flavor, fillet can be paired with a variety of red or white wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon may be the most famous red wine grape variety on the planet. It is full-bodied and can stand up to most any steak, including those prepared with smoke, marinades or pepper. Try pairing your fillet with Cakebread Cabernet from California’s Napa Valley.

Chardonnay

Not all white wines work well with steak because they often lack the intensity and tannins to stand up to red meat. Chardonnay is an exception.  If you are firing up the barbecue for a grilled fillet, look for lightly-oaked Chardonnays with a smoky or nutty quality, and those with a natural acidity and structure that will support the richness of a steak right off the grill.  We heartily recommend the Far Niente Chardonnay from Napa Valley, California.

Malbec

Malbec is one of France’s most heavily produced and popular red wines. It is also cultivated and produced in large quantities in Argentina. Malbec features a rich, full bodied taste with berry-like fruit flavors. Try the Kaiken Reserva Malbec from Argentina. This one is a full-bodied red filled with cherry, blackberry fruit that pairs well with fillet steak, sirloin and braised lamb.

Merlot

Some consider Merlot to be the Chardonnay of red wines. It is easy to drink and the second most popular type of red wine behind Cabernet Sauvignon. A dry, full-bodied wine, it pairs well with almost any type of food, and especially with tender, mild cuts of beef (such as fillet) as well as with grilled foods. Try the 2017 Gold Medal winner of the TEXSOM International Wine Awards, Ferrari-Carano Merlot from Sonoma County, California.
