About Jamaica’s Appleton Estate
Barbados’ Mount Gay Distilleries claims the title of the world’s oldest rum producer, dating back to 1703. But the origins of the Appleton sugar plantation go back to 1655, the year Jamaica was captured by the English from the Spanish.
By 1749, Appleton Estate was an established rum-producing sugar plantation and has been continuously operated for two and a half centuries. The estate where the sugarcane is harvested, processed, distilled, and aged encompasses over 11,000 acres (3,700 in sugarcane). Today, Appleton is the most famous rum producer in the Caribbean.
The Appleton Estate is located in the fertile Nassau Valley on either side of the Black River in St. Elizabeth Parish, which is part of Jamaica’s Cockpit Country. The soil here is very rich in nutrients thanks to sediments left behind as rivers receded over millions of years.
Appleton Estate Reserve Rum
Appleton Estate Reserve Rum is a blend of over 20 aged rums that are distilled on the Appleton estate in copper pot stills, then aged for various periods and bottled. The youngest of the rums is aged eight years in used Jack Daniels whiskey barrels.
The rum is quite aromatic and offers toffee, nutmeg, smoky spices, and a hint of candied fruits on the nose and buttery pastry, toffee, hints of dark chocolate, and enough oak to satisfy a bourbon lover on the palate. Appleton Estate Reserve Rum excels in cocktails, including Daiquiris or any drink that calls for a dark rum.

Kingston 62 Jamaica Gold Rum is the newest rum produced by Appleton Estate, and it’s replacing an old Cayman favorite, the Appleton Special brand.
Kingston 62 is produced at the Appleton Estate Distillery with limestone filtered water and non-GMO molasses and yeast. It uses the same original Appleton Special and White recipes that were developed in the 1940s.
The name and packaging design celebrate the history of Jamaica’s independence in 1962 and Lion branding that symbolizes the strength, courage, and pride of the Jamaican people.
