Austria is not one of the countries you generally think of when considering a wine purchase, but many nations not famous for grape growing and wine production are coming to the attention of wine lovers.
It takes time to establish wine-growing fame. A lot of trial and error goes into producing grapes that are a foundation of a great wine. It takes even more time to build a good reputation in the wine industry, and Austria seems to have succeeded.
A Quick History of Austrian Wines
In the 1990s, Austria finally got the formula right for superior wine. The Gruner Veltliner grape is predominately grown in Austria. This grape produces delicious dry white wine and makes up over 30% of the harvested grapes. When the grapes are crushed, everything goes into the vats. When we say everything, we are talking grapes, grape skins, and stems; they are all aged together. Only when the wine is ready to be put into barrels is everything filtered out.
The best-known wines to come out of Austria are the Kracher wines. Recognizable by the bottle’s unique design, these wines have always been in a league of their own. Wine connoisseurs have labeled it a deliciously sweet wine with bold fruit flavors. There are other Austrian wines; but Kracher seems to be a favorite around the world.
We highly recommend the 2013 Kracher Beerenauslese. This smooth and moderately sweet wine offers apricot, honey and butter flavors, with a hint of orange peel and candied pineapple. On the finish, an array of fruit breaks loose – tart apple, apple jelly, candied grapefruit peel and candied lemon. The sweet finish lingers.
