Beck’s Beer Facts

Born in 1873: Beck’s was established by Luder Rutenberg, an architect, builder, and future beer baron, who started his brewery in Bremen, Germany, and hired businessman Thomas May and brewer Heinrich Beck (the beer’s namesake), who learned the brewing trade as an immigrant in the US.

Accolades: Beck’s became a hit in the U.S. after it won the gold medal for “Best Continental [European] Beer” at the 1876 World Expo in Philadelphia.

Bottles & kegs: Beck’s was the first German brewery to use green bottles for its beer and to export beer in steel kegs (the industry standard today).

Same recipe: In accordance with the German Purity Law of 1516, beer had to be made only with hops, malt, barley, and water. The hops in Beck’s are from the Bavarian Hallertau region, and the yeast is their exclusive strain. The recipe has not changed since 1873.

Label art: Beck’s implemented an Art Label Campaign in 1987 to offer up-and-coming artists the opportunity to provide designs to replace the brand’s label.

Ownership: Since 2008, Beck’s has been owned by the Interbrew subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV, commonly known as AB InBev, which also owns Budweiser, Corona, Stella Artois, Hoegaarden, Leffe, and approximately 400 other beer brands around the globe.

Sales: Beck’s supplies both Germany and foreign countries with around seven million hectoliters of beer each year. Beck’s is available in 120 countries on all five continents, and approximately 3,000 Beck’s beers are drunk every minute of every day!
