History of Beer
Beer is often considered the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage. The ancient Egyptians first documented the brewing process on papyrus scrolls around 5,000 B.C. Beer was valued for its nutritional value and because it was a safe alternative to contaminated drinking water.
By the Middle Ages, German monks began to use wild hops in beer, and the ingredient quickly caught on. Hops added a pleasing bitterness and acted as a natural preservative, extending the life of their beers. Monks are also credited with other brewing innovations, including “lagering,” or cold storing, beer to improve its flavor. Even today, a number of Belgian monasteries rank among the greatest breweries in the world.

- Caybrew is a full-bodied premium pale lager from Cayman Islands Brewery. It has a clean, crisp character and is the brewery’s flagship product. It has been awarded an international gold medal for quality and is enjoyed by Caymanians and visitors from around the world.
- Dragon Stout is imported from Jamaica, where it was introduced in 1920. It pours an exceptionally dark brown with a thin beige head, and features tastes of dark fruits, dark chocolate, dark brown sugar and sweet roasted malt.
- Hoegaarden is a well-known, award-winning wheat beer that comes from the Belgian village of Hoegaarden, where white beers (witbieren) have been brewed since 1445. It incorporates flavors of orange peel and coriander that were originally imported from the Caribbean island of Curaçao, once occupied by Dutch colonists.
- Magic Hat #9 is a brew from Vermont that is marketed as “Not Quite Pale Ale.” It does have a pale ale color, but the brewers keep its flavoring ingredients secret. As a somewhat fruity beer, it can be quite refreshing in Cayman’s warm climate.
