Budweiser History and Trivia

Budweiser is an American-style pale lager produced by Anheuser-Busch, which is currently part of the transnational corporation Anheuser-Busch InBev. It is produced in various breweries around the world and has become one of the largest-selling beers in the United States.

When Adolphus Busch emigrated to St. Louis, Missouri from Germany in the 1850s, he went to work in the brewing supply business and the Anheuser brewery was a client. He would eventually marry the owner’s daughter, Lilly Anheuser, and began working for his father-in-law. By 1880, Adolphus Busch had become the president of the company, which was now called Anheuser-Busch.

In 1876, Busch teamed up with local restaurant owner, Carl Conrad, to create a recipe (which they initially called “Conrad Budweiser”) for a refreshing lager like the Bohemian brews created around the city of Budweis in the Czech Republic. The duo named the beer Budweiser in an effort to appeal to immigrants who were seeking familiar beer styles in their new home.

Here are some other interesting facts:

  • In the 19th century, beer that traveled long distances would spoil. The Anheuser-Busch brewery was the first to pasteurize beer to make it more durable. It also built a refrigerated train car network so its lagers would stay fresh as they traveled across the country.
  • Anheuser-Busch was one of only a few breweries to stay open during the 10-plus years of Prohibition. They did it by manufacturing non-alcoholic products.
  • When Prohibition officially ended on December 6, 1933, August Busch Sr. received six Clydesdale horses from his son, August Jr., in honor of Repeal Day. These same horses delivered the first post-Prohibition beers to the White House. Today, Budweiser has one of the world’s largest Clydesdale herds.
  • Today, the company claims to use the same ingredients that Adolphus Busch used when he started the brewery: water, barley, malt, yeast, hops, and rice.
  • Since 1907, the Budweiser brand has been embroiled in various trademark disputes with German and Czech brewers over use of the name “Budweiser.” Consequently, in parts of Europe, Budweiser is sold as “Bud.”
