About Rum

Once a favorite of sailors, privateers, and pirates, rum was first distilled on sugarcane plantations in Barbados in the 1600s. Made from sugarcane or sugarcane by-products, such as molasses or sugarcane syrup, its flavors come from the raw ingredients and the way it is made and aged.

  • White rum – also known as light or silver rum, it has almost no color and is the lightest in flavor. It is filtered several times to remove impurities and is not aged very long.
  • Gold rum – has been aged in wooden casks for some period of time to give it its signature color and richer, sweeter flavor.
  • Dark rum – also known as black rum, is aged the longest of any of these types of rum, which gives it a dark color and deep, smoky flavor.
  • Spiced rum –is typically aged for the same length of time as black rum, but spices and caramel colorings are added to give it its signature sweet spice taste.

Although produced all over the world today, many of the best rums are still made in the Caribbean, including Captain Morgan rum.

Interesting Facts About Captain Morgan and His Namesake Rum

Captain Morgan is one of the most recognizable liquor brands and was, indeed, a real person. Born in Wales in the 1600s and an admiral in the British Royal Navy, Sir Henry Morgan was hired by the British government to protect their colonial interests in the Caribbean from Spain, at any cost. After his ruthless buccaneering activities, he served as Governor of Jamaica, where he lived until his death.

In 1944, the Seagram Company, based in Canada, started producing rum under the name Captain Morgan Rum Company. Seagram CEO Samuel Bronfman purchased a distillery named Long Pond from the Jamaican government, along with the rights to a spiced rum recipe produced by a Kingston pharmacy named Levy Brothers.

Today, the Captain Morgan brand is owned by Diageo and is produced on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Most Captain Morgan rum is sold in the United States, Canada, U.K., Germany, Australia, South Africa, Mexico and France.

The image of the “Captain” character that appears on the Captain Morgan Spiced Rum bottle was created by award-winning artist, Don Maitz, who specializes in sci-fi and fantasy. The iconic pirate character is his most widely recognized work.

In addition to the brand’s flagship Original Spiced Rum, their products now include a lighter White Rum, a 100 proof Spiced Rum, flavored rums like Coconut and Pineapple, and even a Captain Morgan Private Stock that blends Puerto Rican rums with a more subtle dose of spice.
