10 Interesting Facts About Champagne

  1. All sparkling wine is not Champagne. Champagne is the name of a region in northeast France, not a grape or a style of wine. The chalky soil and cool climate create a delicate balance of acidity, ripeness, and aroma. If the grapes are not grown here, the beverage cannot legally be called Champagne.
  2. Champagne is primarily made from three grapes, two of which are red: Pinot Noir (red), Pinot Meunier (red), and Chardonnay (white).
  3. Several Champagne houses in Reims, France, such as Taittinger, age their Champagne in mazes of underground chalk caves that were originally excavated in about 80 BC by the Ancient Romans. The Taittinger caves are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  4. Champagne emits 30 bubbles per second. Smaller bubbles signify higher-quality Champagne.
  5. There is about 90 pounds per square inch of pressure inside a Champagne bottle, or about three times the pressure inside the average car tire.
  6. When opening a bottle of champagne, the cork can travel up to 40 miles per hour, so take care where you point it. About two dozen people are killed by Champagne corks each year, primarily at weddings!
  7. Your bubbly will stay more bubbly if you drink it from a glass called a “flute.” Dry your Champagne flutes with a cloth towel to see more bubbles.
  8. According to her biographer, Marilyn Monroe once took a bath in champagne. It took 350 bottles to fill up the tub.
  9. The late British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was a famous Champagne-lover. He reportedly drank 42,000 bottles of the bubbly between 1908 and 1965. The Pol Roger Champagne house made a special pint bottle that was to be served to him each day at 11 AM.
  10. On average, 28,000 bottles of Champagne are served at Wimbledon each year.
