About Chilean Wine
For a New World wine region, Chilean wine has a long history. Spanish conquistadors brought grape vines with them when they colonized the region in the 16th Century.
Previously known mostly for its sweet wines, by the mid-19th Century, Chile had introduced French wine varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenère, and Franc.
Prior to the 1980s, most of Chile’s wine was considered low quality and was mostly consumed domestically. As awareness of Chile’s favorable growing conditions for viticulture grew, so did foreign investment in Chilean wineries and many technical advances in winemaking helped Chile earn a reputation for reasonably priced premium quality wines.
With a climate described as midway between that of California and France, Chile today is the fifth largest exporter of wines in the world, and the seventh largest producer.
Chilean Wines to Try
Cabernet Sauvignon: This is the most widely planted grape variety in Chile. Chilean Cab typically produces a lighter colored, less tannic style of the wine, with juicy flavors of black cherry, plums, smoked bell pepper, and mint. Central Valley (Valle Central) wines from places like Maipo, Colchagua, and the Maule Valley are known for their good value, We recommend the Montes Alpha Cabernet from Colchagua.
Chardonnay: Chilean Chardonnay delivers the tropical fruit flavors you find in Californian Chardonnay, but these wines get an added burst of activity from Chile’s Pacific coastline and the cool ocean breezes.
