The Jacques Scott Guide to Tequila

Tequila is a spirit made exclusively in Mexico from the blue agave plants grown around the city of Tequila in Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacan, Nayarit, or Tamaulipas.

While five different styles of tequila exist, the three most common are:

  • Blanco (Silver)
    • Clear
    • Unaged
    • Most natural sweetness from the blue agave
  • Reposado (Aged)
    • Aged or “rested”
    • Aged for 2-11 months before distillation
    • Softer flavor than Blanco
  • Añejo (Extra-Aged)
    • Aged for a year minimum in barrels
    • Very smooth, sophisticated flavor
    • Darker color

Introducing Clase Azul Reposado

Clase Azul Tequila Reposado is made of 100% Blue Weber Agave and is an ultra-premium tequila aged for eight months in American whiskey barrels. This aging process gives the tequila hazelnut and vanilla flavors and a smooth finish for which it is known.

The Clase Azul Tequila Reposado bottle is as special as the tequila itself. This ceramic decanter is handcrafted and painted by Mexican artisans, each one different. The cobalt blue color and feathered design are distinctive and worthy of display on any bar shelf.

The blue agave used to produce Clase Azul Tequilas comes from Los Altos de Jalisco. The height above sea level, the climate, and the earth’s minerals give the plant its special features.

From Agave to Clase Azul Tequila

When the agave is harvested, the removal of the leaves allows access to the core (piña). Cooked slowly in stone ovens, the core is then milled for the sugars.

Next, the fermentation process depends on the company’s patented yeast.

The distillation process occurs in copper stills – twice.

At this point, the Clase Azul Tequila Plata results. The aged varieties, however, are aged in American Oak barrels.

Now that we know about the tequila, let’s mix a drink!
