Cointreau Is an Essential Purchase

Triple Sec and citrus liqueur, Cointreau is a French orange liqueur used in an assortment of cocktail recipes and as an aperitif to whet the appetite before a meal.

Originally invented in the 1870s, Cointreau became popular after the World’s Fair of 1889. Its key ingredients include orange peels that provide sweet and bitter flavors along with the alcohol from sugar beets. This 80-proof liqueur has a 40% ABV.

Cointreau isn’t the only orange liqueur. Grand Marnier is another option for use in your cocktails. Both types of orange liqueur come from France and have 40% alcohol content.

Grand Marnier and Cointreau are different in a few ways, though. The mixture of both bitter and sweet orange peels isn’t present with Grand Marnier, which uses a single type of bitter orange.

Grand Marnier is also made with Cognac and is aged. The flavor of the Grand Marnier liqueur has greater intensity, oakiness, and sweetness than Cointreau orange liqueur. The lightness of Cointreau makes it more appropriate for use as a foundational ingredient in various cocktails.
