Reds
France offers the perfect red wine for every occasion! It can be confusing to know what to look for, however, because many French wines are labeled with the name of the wine region (e.g., Bordeaux, Burgundy), and rarely by grape variety.
Beaujolais: The Beaujolais region is one of France’s most underrated wine regions. The region produces almost only red wine with Gamay Noir grapes. Its soft tannins, bright cranberry, and raspberry-like fruit make it a lot of fun to drink, and it pairs well with virtually any food. Try the Drouhin Fleurie Cru, an amazingly silky selection with raspberry and floral violets.
Bordeaux: The temperate climate and nearby ocean on the Médoc peninsula make the elegant red wines of Bordeaux special. Most Bordeaux wines are a blend of Merlot (with its depth and velvety richness) and Cabernet Sauvignon (adding fruit and body) and are appreciated by serious wine lovers. Try the Chateau De Castres, which delivers sensational notes of red cherry, cedary oak and minerals.
Whites
Choosing the right French white wine to enjoy with dinner or serve to guests isn’t hard. Try one our recommendations below and save yourself time.
Chablis – Chablis hails primarily from Burgundy, France and is made from chardonnay grapes. (There is no such thing as a chablis grape.) The wine is clean, crisp and dry and is great on its own, but pairs nicely with a wide variety of foods. We highly recommend the Drouhin Chablis, which is pale gold in color, with candied lemon citrus, soft herbs and a delicate mineral finish.
Sancerre – Sancerre is made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape and comes from France’s Loire Valley where it acquires a more subtle and complex flavor. It’s extremely versatile. The citrus in it will pair perfectly with poultry and fish and it’s an excellent choice with meat, vegetables and a wide range of cheeses. Try the Chateau De Sancerre which has an embracing acidity, bright green and stone fruit flavors, and a zesty and vibrant finish.
