Types of Rum

While many people believe there are only two types of rum – white rum and dark rum – there are actually four types of rum that differ based on distillation and aging:

  • White/Light Rum: White rum is clear like vodka and has a light and refreshing flavor. It is aged for less time than other varieties and is filtered many times until it’s free of impurities. It is commonly used in cocktails.
  • Gold/Amber Rum: Instead of being filtered and bottled right after distillation, gold rums are aged first in charred oak or wooden barrels to give them a darker color and a bolder, richer flavor. They are excellent in cocktails and for drinking straight.
  • Dark/Black Rum: Many consider dark rum as the purest expression of one of the most widely used sugarcane byproducts – molasses. The rum is then typically aged in oak barrels to further develop its dark color and smoky-sweet flavor.
  • Spiced Rum: Spiced rum is aged for as long as dark/black rum but includes ingredients other than sugar, such as spices and caramel colorings, to create its signature sweet, spicy taste that is a favorite in some cocktails.

About Havana Club Rum

Havana Club 7 Años – “El Ron de Cuba” (“The Rum of Cuba”) – comes in a tall sleek black bottle. It is a full-flavored, rich and sophisticated Cuban-style rum with plenty of elegance and class. The sweetness of the molasses-filled rum is balanced out by peppery oak spices and notes of wood and leather that give it an unmistakable smoky character. The popular rum is widely available in markets outside of the U.S., such as on Grand Cayman.

Brand History

The Havana Club rum brand was created by the Arechabala family in Cuba in 1934. It was sold in the U.S. market until the 1959 Cuban Revolution when the distillery was seized by the Cuban government. The Arechabala family lost their business and went into exile.

The Bacardi family, another top rum maker and Havana Club rival in pre-revolution Cuba, also lost their business and went into exile. They bought the legal rights to the Havana Club rum recipe and trademark from the Arechabala family and began producing rum under the Havana Club name in 1994 while in exile in Puerto Rico.

Meanwhile, in Havana in 1993, the Cuban government and the French beverage giant Pernod Ricard formed a state-run partnership, called Corporación Cuba Ron, to produce Havana Club rum. Today, they are the fifth-largest rum brand in the world.

To avoid confusing customers, Bacardi’s “Havana Club” label states that it is made in Puerto Rico, and the rum is often referred to as “Havana Club Puerto Rican rum.” Pernod Ricard, sells “Havana Club” in over 120 countries, but registered the brand name “Havanista” for eventual U.S. sales.
