- Gerard Heineken was 22 years old in 1864 when he bought De Hooiberg, a struggling Dutch brewery that had been around since the 17th century, with the financial assistance of his wealthy mother. In spite of his lack of knowledge about beer, he went on to create a very successful business.
- The refreshing Heineken flavor is achieved by using just three pure ingredients: water, malted barley, and hops. Before brewing, the barley grain must be malted, which involves soaking it in water and allowing it to germinate. This process helps give the beer its distinct flavor.
- Louis Pasteur, the renowned French chemist, developed a specific type of yeast – the Heineken A-yeast – in 1886 which, to this day, is still a key ingredient in Heineken lager and is responsible for the balanced, crisp, and rich flavor.
