About Hennessy and Hennessy Black

Hennessy is the largest cognac house in the world, producing half of the world’s supply. The company’s founder, Richard Hennessy, was an Irishman who moved to France in the mid-18th century. Thanks to Prohibition, from 1920 to 1933 in America, Hennessy cognac was sold as a medicine in drugstores. It will definitely cure whatever ails you!

Unlike the more famous Hennessy VS, VSOP Privilege and XO cognacs, Hennessy Black was created in 2009 specifically for use in cocktails. It is a blend of about 45 different eaux-de-vie made from Ugni Blanc grapes that are aged two or more years in French Limousin oak barrels. Although not designated a VS cognac, it would fall in the VS category due to its young age (a fact betrayed by its light yellow-gold color).

Hennessy Black is intended to be a versatile cocktail mixer, for use with mixers not normally associated with cognacs, like Coca-Cola, or in cocktails unique to Hennessy Black, or in place of other spirits.

The Cognac Alphabet

If you are a cognac or brandy aficionado, you may want to know what the initials you see on the bottle – VO, VS, VSOP and XO – mean. If you’re wondering why the abbreviations are in English, it’s because the first importers of cognac from France spoke English.

V.S. (“Very Special”): This designation means that the youngest cognac in the blend is at least 2 years old.

V.S.O.P. (“Very Superior Old Pale”): This designation means the youngest cognac in the blend is at least 4 years old; “old pale” comes from the use of caramel coloring which can be used to color-correct.

Napoleon: Apparently a favorite of Napoleon, this term is used to designate a cognac that is 4 years old.

X.O. (“Extra Old”): The least confusing of the terms, XO simply means “extra old!” The “extra” currently means the blend is a minimum of 10 years old.
