About Tennessee Whiskey
American whiskey is not always called “bourbon.” Jack Daniel’s, for example, is Tennessee Whiskey.
Tennessee whiskey is straight whiskey produced in the U.S. state of Tennessee. Although it is legally defined as a “bourbon whiskey” in some international trade agreements, most current producers of Tennessee whiskey refuse to label their products as “bourbon” on bottles and advertising materials.
By law, Tennessee whiskey must be produced in Tennessee. Although most of the whiskeys meet the criteria for bourbon, they are required to use a filtering step called the Lincoln County Process, in which the whiskey is filtered through a thick layer of sugar-maple charcoal before it is put into new charred oak barrels for aging. The filtering process was named for Lincoln County, Tennessee, the home of the Jack Daniel’s distillery when it originally began operations.

Here are some interesting details about Jack Daniel’s:
Jack Daniel was a real person, but his real name was Jasper Newton Daniel, and friends and family called him Jack. He was a young man (possibly even a teenager) when he bought and registered the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee.
Although the flagship single-filtered Old No. 7 is the most popular and well-known type of Jack Daniel’s, there are other varieties as well. Signature Single Barrel is a premium 94-proof whiskey that gets its distinct flavors from an individual aging barrel. Gentleman Jack is double filtered and strong at 94 proof. The Honey and Cinnamon whiskeys are blended with honey liqueur and cinnamon liqueur, respectively.
There are also many different specials and limited-edition bottles of Jack Daniel’s, including the Sinatra Special, named for singer Frank Sinatra who loved the Tennessee whiskey so much that he was buried with a bottle of it.
