Questions & Answers About Prosecco

What is Prosecco?

Prosecco is a bubbly Italian white wine made from highly aromatic Glera grape that is produced in a large area spanning nine provinces in the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions. It is named after the village of Prosecco.

What is the Glera grape?

The Glera grape, formerly known as the Prosecco grape, grew well in the Prosecco region and was actually grown in Ancient Rome. When the wine grew in popularity, better clarification was needed to keep just anyone from using the name. The Prosecco grape was renamed ‘Glera’ in 2010, and 85% of the wine must be made from it for the wine to be labelled Prosecco.

Is all Prosecco bubbly?

No. It wasn’t until the Carpenè-Malvolti winery subjected Prosecco to a second fermentation process in the 19th century that the wine acquired its bubbles. Today, it comes in three levels of “bubbliness” – fully sparkling (spumante), semi-sparkling (frizzante), or completely still (tranquillo).

Does Prosecco require a special glass?

Prosecco is best served chilled in a tulip style sparkling wine glass. The height and slenderness of the tulip glass is said to help preserve the bubbles, and the bulb at the top helps collect more of the floral aromas that emanate from the wine.

Can Prosecco be served with food?

When it comes to food pairing, Prosecco is very versatile. Enjoy it in Mimosas with your breakfast. Serve it with afternoon tea and cookies. It also makes an excellent accompaniment to salty crisps and nuts, and is ideal when paired with creamy pastas, pizza, spicy curries, light salads, sushi, shellfish, and all types of seafood.

Can you recommend a Prosecco?

Yes! Our experts recommend Lunetta Prosecco, which is produced by Cavit, internationally recognized as northern Italy’s largest facility that is dedicated to producing world-class sparkling wines. The name “Lunetta” means “Little Moon” in Italian. We love the enticing aromas of apple and peach and the clean finish.
