Interesting Facts You May Not Know About Patrón
- Patrón was founded in Jalisco, Mexico in 1989 by John Paul DeJoria and Martin Crowley. The company also owns Pyrat rum and Ultimat vodka.
- Although the word “patron” can mean a charitable person, the meaning De Joria and Crowley preferred for their brand was “big boss” or “Godfather.”
- Patrón tequila is made from the juice of the piña, the heart of the Weber Blue Agave plant, in a process that involves baking the agave piñas in small batches for 79 hours, crushing the agave fibers with a large volcanic stone wheel called a Tahona, and then fermenting and distilling the juice with the fiber (which reportedly gives it more flavor).
- Patrón is the largest Tahona tequila producer in the world, with as many as 10 wheels working at once.
- Patrón does not own their own agave fields. Instead, they choose the best agave plants in the world by offering the highest price on the market. Eight families provide 80 to 95% of Patrón’s agave plants.
- Patrón selected the hornet as the symbol for their brand because co-founder John Paul DeJoria served in the US Navy on the USS Hornet aircraft carrier.
- While most tequila distilleries use only American White Oak barrels that were used to age bourbon, Patrón also uses French Oak (Limousin and Allier) and new Hungarian Oak to give their aged tequilas distinct flavors.
- The Patrón bottle is made of mostly recycled glass and handblown and produced in Mexico. The corks, however, are made in Portugal.
- Real Mexican tequila has a 4-digit code called the NOM (Norma Oficial Mexicana) on each bottle, indicating the distillery in which it was made. Patrón’s is 1492.
- Patrón’s tequila recipe and small batch process have not changed since 1989.
- Patrón is the best-selling premium tequila in America.
