What is Cognac?
Cognac is a variety of brandy named after the town of Cognac, France. To be labeled cognac, it must be made in the Cognac region of France, and at least 90% of it must be made from a blend of specific grapes, most notably Ugni Blanc (also known as Saint-Emilion). Otherwise, it’s just brandy!
Reminiscent of those fine whiskeys you love, cognac must be distilled twice in copper pot stills, then aged at least two years in oak barrels made from French oak sourced either from Limousin or Tronçais.
Cognac also has quality grades related to its age, or how long the brandy has been in the cask: V.S. (Very Special); V.S.O.P. (Very Superior Old Pale), Napoleon, and X.O. (Extra Old).
Things to Know About Remy Martin
- Rémy Martin is one of the world’s largest cognac producers.
- The company was founded 295 years ago, in 1724, by a 29-year-old wine grower named Rémy Martin. It was the only Cognac house founded by a winemaker.
- In 1738, in a rare move, King Louis XV of France granted Rémy Martin the right to plant new vines in recognition of his excellent cognacs.
- In 1870, Paul-Emile Rémy Martin introduced the company’s cognacs beyond Europe, to the U.S., Asia and the Pacific. He also created the brand’s first logo, a centaur, in honor of his love for astronomy.
- Early in the 20th century, André Renaud became a partner in E. Rémy Martin & Co., and eventually became the company’s first Cellar Master. Descendants of both the Martin and Renaud families have continued to run the company for nearly three centuries.
- Rémy Martin cognac has been referenced by many rappers, including Dr. Dre, Ja Rule and Notorious B.I.G.
- Between 2003 and 2014, Pierrette Trichet served as Cellar Master. She was the first female Cellar Master of a major cognac house.
