About Ron Zacapa 23 Rum
In commemoration of the centennial anniversary celebration of the city of Zacapa’s founding, Zacapa Rum was founded in 1976. This connection to Guatemala is indicative of the rum overall.
The city of Zacapa lies about 112 km from Guatemala City in the country of Guatemala. In Nahuatl, the Aztec language, Zacapa means “on the river of grass.”
Their Process
Most rums use molasses – not Zacapa rum. To make Zacapa Rum, producers employ the initial press of virgin sugar cane, and this process creates a sweet, smooth rum.
South Guatemala is ideal for growing sugarcane due to the abundance of minerals in the volcanic soil as well as the array of rivers in the region. When you enjoy a glass of Zacapa, you’ll note the complexity of aromas and flavors.
The fermentation process used by Zacapa employs a pineapple yeast strain to draw out even further flavors and aromatics. Once fermentation completes, distillation provides further structure to the profile of each rum.
Upon distillation, Zacapa transfers the rum from the lowlands to the top of a valley 2,300 meters above sea level, referred to by Zacapa as its “House above the Clouds.” The aging among the clouds provides its signature profile.
Petate Weaving graces each bottle of Zacapa Rum. The company hires displaced and impoverished women to weave Petate bands for the bottles. Not only does this work provide the women with income, but it also adds Guatemalan authenticity to the product.
Zacapa’s bottling and distribution takes place out of Mixco. The company considers it an integral part of Guatemala and is proud of its heritage.
