What is Vodka?
Vodka is a clear, unaged spirit that can be made using any ingredient that has fermentable sugars. It is typically made from a variety of grains, including sorghum, rye, barley, corn, or wheat, but can also be made with other things like potatoes, grapes, molasses, rice, or sugar beets.
The base ingredient is fermented, and yeasts turn the sugars into alcohol. Then it’s distilled (usually at least three times) to extract the alcohol. But vodka is too strong to drink right after distillation, so purified water is added to bring it back down to a bottling proof, which is typically 80 proof, or 40 percent alcohol, by volume.
Flavored vodka has a special flavor and aroma added to it. The most popular are fruits (cherries, citrus, berries, pomegranate, etc.), chocolate, and coffee.
You can sip vodka neat (without ice or mixers), but most people mix it into cocktails, such as a Cosmopolitan, Vodka Martini, Bloody Mary, White Russian, and Moscow Mule.
Smirnoff’s Russian Connection
- Introduced in the 1860s by Pyotr Arsenievich Smirnov, this vodka brand has its origins in Moscow. His vodka was reportedly a favorite of the Tsar of Russia. When he died in 1898, Smirnov was one of the richest men in Russia.
- The vodka is filtered to remove impurities using a charcoal filtration method developed by Smirnov and is available in more than 30 flavors. The original filtration method is still used today.
- Smirnov made “charitable contributions” that encouraged the Russian clergy to change its mind on the evils of the drink and stop its anti-vodka sermons. Sales massively increased and proved that a little bit of bribery can sometimes pay off!
