Buying Tips for South African Wines

Wine has been produced in South Africa since the first vines were planted in the 17th century, brought by the governors of the Dutch East India Company who produced wines and grapes to help ward off scurvy amongst sailors during their voyages along the spice route to India and the East.

Wine production is concentrated around Cape Town in these notable districts:

  • Constantia – The Constantia Valley is located south of Cape Town on the Cape Peninsula that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. It is the oldest winegrowing region in the country, with the farm Groot Constantia being the oldest wine estate. With its oceanic influences and moderate and mild winters, Constantia is known for premium cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc and Bordeaux Blend wines, along with the modern dessert wines.
  • Stellenbosch – The Stellenbosch district is the second oldest wine region in South Africa, after Constantia. It is home to the country’s best-known wine estates and is responsible for about 14% of the country’s annual wine production. The region’s climate is hot and dry, although a marine influence comes from False Bay in the south. Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon can be found on wine lists all over the world, while Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Chenin Blanc are all planted here in quantity.
  • Walker Bay – This wine-producing area on the south coast of the Western Cape has one of the coolest maritime climates in South Africa. The region is held in high regard for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, along with fresh, flinty Sauvignon Blanc.
  • Franschhoek Valley – The Franschhoek Valley was founded by Huguenot settlers who brought their traditions and winemaking expertise with them from their native France. The area’s most tried-and-trusted grapes are Semillon, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cabernet Sauvignon: Having originated in Bordeaux, France, Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth and is South Africa’s most widely planted grape variety. Usually classified as a dry wine, Cabernet Sauvignon is full bodied, high in alcohol, and bursting with flavors, including coffee, toffee, and chocolate. We highly recommend Rickety Bridge ‘The Bridge’ Cabernet Sauvignon from the Franschhoek Valley, South Africa.

Sauvignon Blanc: Depending on its ripeness, this grape delivers interesting flavors and is typically crisp with a citrusy zing. It is now successfully grown in wine regions all over the world, including South Africa, California, Chile, northern Italy and Australia, and is now the signature white wine of New Zealand, where it features intense green citrus and berry fruit flavors. We highly recommend the Southern Right Sauvignon Blanc from Walker Bay, South Africa.
