About Pilsners/Lagers
Stella Artois is a Belgian pilsner, a type of pale lager that takes its name from Pilsen (originally in Bohemia and now part of the Czech Republic), where it was first produced in 1842.
To appease consumers who disliked the area’s top-fermented Bohemian beers, a city-owned brewery was established to brew beer in the pioneering Bavarian style, using paler malts, Pilsen’s remarkably soft water, noble hops, and storage in cool caves to produce a clear, golden beer with a long shelf life. It was an instant success.
Breweries now use the terms “lager” and “pilsner” interchangeably, although pale lagers from Germany and the Czech Republic with the name Pilsner tend to have more evident noble hop aroma and dry finish than other pale lagers.

- The roots of Stella Artois trace back to the Den Hoorn brewery in Leuven, Belgium in 1366. It was originally brewed as a special Christmas beer and christened Stella (Latin for “star.”) The beer was so popular that it became available throughout the year.
- In 1717, Master Brewer Sebastian Artois purchased the brewery and changed its name to Artois. The Stella Artois brand debuted more than 200 years later, in 1926.
- Stella Artois is brewed using only the finest natural ingredients – water, barley malt, hops, non-malted grains, and a secret yeast strain that has been kept throughout the years. No other brewery in the world uses this particular yeast strain.
