The Love of American Whiskey

Whiskey made in the United States comes in six different major forms, with the form dependent on the type of cereal grain. The actual percentages are regulated by Title 27 of the US Code. The six forms include:

  • Rye whiskey (minimum of 51% rye in mash)
  • Rye malt whiskey (minimum of 51% malted rye in mash)
  • Malt whiskey (minimum of 51% malted barley in mash)
  • Wheat whiskey (minimum of 51% wheat in mash)
  • Bourbon whiskey (minimum of 51% corn in mash)
  • Corn whiskey (minimum of 51% corn in mash)

The key to differentiating between bourbon and corn whiskey is the barrels used for aging. Bourbon must be aged in new charred containers while corn whiskey is aged in new or used uncharred containers.

Other rules that apply to these six styles of American Whiskey include that they must be:

  • Distilled to a maximum of 80% ABV, otherwise referred to as 160 proof.
  • Without addition of colorings, caramel, or flavor additives.
  • Aged in charred, new oak barrels (except for corn whiskey).

The degree of age applied to whiskey can also be considered a category-defining feature. Straight whiskeys are those that do not surpass the 80% ABV maximum, have been aged a minimum of two years, and haven’t been combined with other liquors or additives.

Other descriptive categories of American whiskeys include blended whiskey, blend of straight whiskey, light whiskey (greater than 80% ABV), or spirit whiskey (spirit mixed with a minimum of 5% whiskey).

Finally, when you see the term Tennessee whiskey, it means that the product came from that specific geographic location.

About Templeton Rye Whiskey

The backstory of Templeton Distillery alone is enough inspiration to give Templeton Rye Whiskey a taste. During Prohibition, the region of Templeton, Iowa, saw a great deal of illegal production of rye whiskey.

A documentary in 2011 explored notorious gangster Al Capone’s affinity for the rye whiskey produced in the region.

Features of Templeton Rye Whiskey:
