About Bourbon

Bourbon has been distilled since the 18th century. As you may already know, all Bourbon is whiskey, but all whiskey is not Bourbon.

Bourbon is not as simple as you might think. For a whiskey to be called Bourbon, it must by law be made of a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn; be distilled at no more than 80% alcohol (160 proof); be aged in new, charred oak barrels (a process that gives the Bourbon its reddish color and distinctive taste) at no more than 62.5% (125 proof); and bottled at 80 proof or more. Lastly, it must be made in the United States.

Approximately 95% of all Bourbon is produced in Kentucky. The name may have originated in an area called Old Bourbon, now known as Bourbon County. It may also have been named after Bourbon Street in New Orleans, a major port where shipments of the Kentucky whiskey were a popular alternative to the more expensive French cognac.

About Woodford Reserve

The oldest Bourbon distillery in Kentucky is the Woodford Reserve Distillery, which has been distilling on the same site since 1780. Woodford is practically the inventor of the spirit we know and love today. Rich and thick with the flavors of toffee, caramel chocolate, baking spices, and orange zest, you can’t go wrong with the classic dark amber Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

The original bourbon begins with a mashbill that includes 18 percent rye, among the highest concentrations in the bourbon industry. It gives the whiskey a nice spice that is contrasted by its extreme smoothness. The rest of the mashbill is 72 percent corn and 10 percent malted barley.

Following fermentation, Woodford Reserve is distilled three times in pot stills versus the more commonly used column stills. The whiskey is aged in 1870 stone warehouses. These buildings use a process called heat cycling, which involves heating and cooling the air to control the maturation process better.

On average, Woodford Reserve spends seven years in new charred American oak barrels before it’s blended and bottled. Most of Woodford Reserve’s whiskeys are 45.2 percent alcohol by volume (90.4 proof).
