Wine Guide

There is a lot to know about wine, and we hope the following descriptions and tips will help you decide on one you would like to try!

Red Wines

Cabernet Sauvignon: This may be the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth! Usually considered a dry wine, it is full bodied, high in alcohol, and bursting with flavors, including coffee, toffee, and chocolate. It pairs well with grilled red meat, beef stroganoff, ribs, and stews. We highly recommend the award-winning Jordan Cabernet from California’s Alexander Valley.

Pinot Noir: Pinot Noir features strong, oaky overtones and is considered a moderately dry medium-to-light bodied wine. It pairs well with roasted duck, hearty fish such as salmon or tuna, pork, and spicy Asian and Mediterranean dishes. We highly recommend the award-winning Sokol Blosser Dundee Hills Pinot Noir from Oregon’s Willamette Valley.

Syrah/Shiraz: Some of the world’s most famous Syrah wines are the peppery, earthy ones from France, but California, Washington, Oregon, Chile and Argentina also produce complex, rich wines. Try Montes Alpha Syrah from Colchagua Valley, Chile. It pairs beautifully with rich seafood dishes like paella as well as grilled meats of all kinds.

White Wines

Chardonnay: Chardonnay is the most planted white wine grape in the world, but California’s wines are among the most highly regarded. It has buttery aromas and spicy notes. Try Au Contraire Chardonnay from California’s Russian River Valley paired with mild cheeses, seafood, chicken, or pork.

Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris: Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are the same grape; one is the Italian name; the other is French. The wine has crisp, light, fruit flavors. In addition to Italy, France, Germany and California, it has also become the pre-eminent white wine grape from Oregon. We recommend San Angelo Pinot Grigio from Tuscany, Italy. It pairs well with seafood, grilled vegetables and pasta dishes.

Sauvignon Blanc/Fumé Blanc: Fumé Blanc is the same grape as Sauvignon Blanc. A dry, crisp wine, it is the benchmark white wine of New Zealand but is a major player in France, Austria, Australia, Chile and California. Try the Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand’s Marlborough region. Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with everything from salads to seafood.
