The Cayman Islands lie in the northwestern the Caribbean Sea and are situated about 500 miles south of Miami, 180 miles south of Cuba, and 195 miles northwest of Jamaica. Grand Cayman is the biggest island (76 square miles in area). The two “Sister Islands” of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are located about 80 miles east of Grand Cayman and have areas of 14 square miles and 10 square miles, respectively.

What is the best time to visit the Cayman Islands?

Any time of the year is a great time to visit. If you love dry weather with low humidity, visit our tropical paradise between November and April. We have lots of sunshine, little rain, and refreshing sea breezes, with average high temperatures from 75°-86°F; average lows of 68°-72°F; and water temperatures between 78° and 82°F. Our summer runs from May to October. We have more rain at this time of year, but air and water temperatures are warmer. You will also enjoy fewer crowds and lower hotel prices during the summer.

Can you drink the water in Grand Cayman?

For the most part, the water in Grand Cayman is completely safe to cook with and drink. The water is pumped from deep underground, and there are two desalination plants on Island that supply good-quality purified tap water. If you plan to visit our sister islands, you will find that Cayman Brac also has a desalination plant that supplies purified water, but Little Cayman does not. Establishments there have their own water systems, some relying on rainwater collected in cisterns. If that is the case in your hotel, it is safer to choose bottled water. Do not drink from a river, spring, or stream under any circumstances.

What currency is used in the Cayman Islands?

US dollars, Canadian dollars, British Pounds, Euros, Australian dollars, and many other currencies are accepted throughout the Islands. You will find the prices at most bars, restaurants, and stores listed in the local currency – the Cayman Islands Dollar (currency code KYD), which is sometimes abbreviated as CI$. The rate between the Cayman Islands Dollar and the US Dollar is fixed at KYD $1.00 to USD $1.25 based on an international banking agreement. This means that $5 USD converts to about $4 KYD.
