Pairing Beer with Food: Anything Goes!

In many ways, it can be easier to pair food with beer than with wine. Beer has an amazing capacity to pair with all kinds of foods. Some pairings are better than others, of course, but if you’re grilling fish and are in the mood for a stout, there is no rule that says you can’t do it.

Try matching the intensity of the beer with the intensity of the food – lighter beers like pale ales and pilsners pair well with appetizers and salads; heavier beers like stouts pair well with hearty main meals. Or, consider the main flavors in the beer (malty, hoppy, nutty, fruity) and pair them with the main flavors in your meal (roasted, spicy, savory, buttery, sweet).

Another option is to try pairing classic regional beer styles with classic dishes from the same region or country. For example, British stouts pair well with pub food. German lagers pair well with sausages and cabbage rolls. And Belgian beers go with virtually anything.

Here are more food pairing tips for some common beer styles from the experts at Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits:

  • Pale Ales: Try them with light appetizers, salads, sushi, fish and seafood, burgers, buffalo wings, grilled cheese sandwiches, roast chicken, pizza and steaks.
  • India Pale Ales (IPAs): IPAs go well with foods like pizza, pulled pork and fried chicken, in addition to salads and seafood dishes. Also try them with Asian food and Mexican food; the hoppiness can amplify the spice.
  • Bock Beers: These beers are a great match for Cajun food, sausages, beef and jerk chicken.
  • Lagers: Lagers are great for pairing with grilled meats, fish tacos, shellfish, including mussels and oysters, and foods with the flavors of cilantro, ginger, and garlic.
  • Wheat Beers and Hefeweizens: Try them with dinner salads and soups, fruity Asian dishes, vegetarian dishes, sushi, and desserts made with cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg.
  • Stouts and Porters: Pair them with barbecued/grilled foods, smoked foods, stews, chili, sausages, and rich desserts with chocolate and espresso flavors.

There are no wrong answers when pairing beer with food. If you’re cooking a great meal in the Cayman Islands, order the beer to go with it from Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits, and enjoy free delivery!
