Best Scuba Diving Spots on Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman has unique shipwrecks that have become world-famous snorkel and dive sights. Due to strong currents as well as boat and jet ski traffic, however, we recommend booking your trip with a licensed operator.

The USS Kittiwake, for example, is a 251-foot-long former US Navy submarine support ship that is located just 60 feet below the water in West Bay near the shore of Seven Mile Beach. Explore the ship’s five decks or snorkel from above to see 50 species of coral and more than 500 species of fish. The Kittiwake can be enjoyed by all skill levels of snorkelers and scuba divers.

Explore two of Grand Cayman’s most popular dive sites – Eden Rock and Devil’s Grotto – just south of Seven Mile Beach and approximately 45 feet below the surface. The coral reefs rise in vertical cliff faces from a 40-foot sand bottom to within a few feet of the surface. Photographers love the light play and abundant marine life at Devil’s Grotto, while Eden Rock offers small caverns, tunnels, and swim-throughs. Check out Eden Rock Diving Center in George Town for dive excursions and equipment rental.

In George Town and a short swim from the pier at Sunset House Resort, you will find Sunset Reef, a popular site for shore diving thanks to its famous mermaid statue and several cavernous reefs. With visibility of about 80 to 100 feet (25 to 30 m), look for passing hawksbill turtles, dories, parrotfish, and schools of Caribbean reef squid. Rent tanks at the Sunset Divers dive shop or hire a guide to show you around the beautiful reef.

Scuba Diving on Cayman Brac

Cayman Brac offers dozens of dive sites for new and experienced divers. The purposely sunk MV Captain Keith Tibbetts is a must-see site. It’s a Russian Koni class frigate that was sunk in 1996 to create an easily accessible artificial reef. Other recommendations include the Radar Reef, Buccaneer Reef, walls like Wilderness Wall, and Tarpon Reef with its many tunnel and crevices.

Scuba Diving on Little Cayman

Little Cayman is famous for wall diving and its healthy marine environment. The lack of a strong current here makes diving especially enjoyable for new divers. Many dives start right from the shore.  Explore the dive sites at Jackson Bight at the northwest end of the Island, or the excellent dive sites located along Bloody Bay Wall, a spectacular vertical wall with more than 15 different sites.
