About the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands, which consists of Grand Cayman and her smaller siblings, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, are an overseas territory of the United Kingdom.

Grand Cayman is the largest of our three Islands and home to our colorful capital, George Town. The Island is only about 22 miles long, but packed with spectacular beaches and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Cayman Brac, about 89 miles to the northeast, is only about 12 miles long, but has the most spectacular terrain of the three islands, while Little Cayman, five miles west of Cayman Brac, is even smaller (about 10 miles long) but is a nature lover’s dream.

Popular Snorkel Sites in the Cayman Islands

Grand Cayman

  • Dive or snorkel on the wreck of the USS Kittiwake, a 251-foot-long former submarine support ship that is settled in the waters off Seven Mile Beach. She was sunk in 2011 to serve as an artificial reef and an ocean tribute to seafarers worldwide. The water is clear enough to see the wreck from the surface and is ideal for snorkelers and people diving for the first time. Explore the ship deck by deck or snorkel from above to see 50 species of coral and more than 500 species of fish.
  • Cemetery Beach, at the northern end of Seven Mile Beach, is about 100 to 200 feet out from the shore and features some incredibly beautiful snorkeling that is most suitable for confident swimmers. You can see many different species of brightly colored tropical fish and coral here, including snappers, jacks, sergeant majors, tangs, surgeonfish, parrotfish, turtles and stingrays.

Little Cayman

Little Cayman is prized for its scuba diving, but snorkeling is equally popular thanks to some shallow reefs. Bloody Bay, in the western part of the Island, offers a number of snorkel-friendly sites. Jackson’s Point Beach has a beautiful reef with healthy coral and active fish, where you’ll see sea turtles and rays. And Owen Island offers excellent visibility at sites inside and outside the reef.

Cayman Brac

Snorkeling is popular off the north coast of the island, especially at West End, where the coral is formed quite close to the shore.  The sites include the MV Captain Keith Tibbetts, Snapper Reef, and the Rock Monster Chimney.  Along the south coast, explore the excellent sites called Pillar Coral Reef, Fry Cave, and Hedy’s Reef.
