Pair Wine with Your Food

Cabernet Sauvignon: Cabernet Sauvignon is the king of red wine grapes and is widely accepted as one of the world’s best varieties. Enjoy it with:

  • Well-marbled beef
  • Steak
  • Pot roast
  • Grilled red meat
  • Duck
  • Spice rubs and smoky sauces
  • Marinades containing soy sauce

Our staff recommends the bold Pied a Terre Cabernet from Sonoma County, California.

Chardonnay: This popular white grape grows all around the world, but some of the finest originate in Italy, France, California, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Chardonnay is known for its crisp fruit flavors and aromas. Enjoy it with:

  • Shellfish (shrimp, lobster, crab, scallops)
  • White-fleshed fish, e.g., halibut, mahi-mahi, tilapia
  • Roast chicken and turkey
  • Veal
  • Risotto and pasta
  • Cream and butter sauces
  • Mild Caribbean dishes with tropical fruit flavors

Our staff recommends the elegant Lewis Cellars Chardonnay from California’s Napa Valley.

Riesling: Riesling is a highly aromatic and fruity grape variety. It can span a broad range of styles, being produced in both dry to sweet and light to full-bodied variations. Enjoy it with:

  • Pork, including ham
  • Shellfish
  • Salads and vegetables
  • Barbecue
  • Sausages and deli meats
  • Southwestern and other hot, spicy foods
  • Asian dishes, such as Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Indian

We recommend a bottle of Blue Fish Sweet Riesling from Pfalz, Germany for its ripe peach, pear, and apricot flavors and great value.

Sauvignon Blanc: This grape can deliver interesting flavors. It is now the benchmark white wine of New Zealand and is a major player in France, Austria, Australia, Chile, South Africa, and California. Sauvignon Blanc should be served chilled. Enjoy it with:

  • Fish (e.g., sole, swordfish, red snapper)
  • Shellfish (crab, scallops, clams)
  • Oysters
  • Pasta
  • Poultry
  • Green vegetables (asparagus, zucchini, fresh peas, artichokes)
  • Soft goat cheese

Our staff recommends the excellent Southern Right Sauvignon Blanc from Walker Bay, South Africa.

Zinfandel: Zinfandel can be a little confusing because there are red Zinfandels and White Zinfandels (which are pink). Both wines come from the same grapes. Zinfandel, meaning the red version, is known for its rich, dark color, high acidity, and medium to high tannin levels. It has a lighter body than other red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Enjoy it with:

  • Steaks with some fat (rib eyes, T-bones, Porterhouse)
  • Leg of lamb
  • Barbecue pork ribs
  • Poultry
  • Italian Sausage
  • Grilled fish and fish stews
  • Pasta and pizza

Our staff recommends the award-winning Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel from California’s Sonoma Valley.
