Wine Buying Tips

Buying wine should be a fun experience. But, with over 1,300 types of wine grapes, where do you start? Here are four red wines and four white wines that may be unfamiliar. We hope they will help guide you through your adventure into wine.

White Wines

Spanish Albariño: Spain’s quintessential white wine, Albariño is typically dry and citrus-flavored. It pairs well with octopus, grilled or spicy fish, shellfish, mussels, and roasted vegetables. We recommend the Vionta Albarino from Galicia, Spain.

California Chardonnay: Chardonnay is the world’s most famous white wine grape, but California’s are among the most highly regarded. With buttery aromas and spicy notes, they can have an oaky flavor.  Pair it with mild cheeses, seafood, chicken, pork and fruity desserts. Pick up a bottle of Cherry Tart Chardonnay from California.

German Riesling: Rieslings are among the finest light, fruity and sweet wines in the world. Some of the best come from Germany and Austria. The wine pairs well with seafood and spicy foods. Try the Schloss Johannisberger Rotlack Kabinett Feinherb Riesling from Germany.

French Sauvignon Blanc: If you love dry, crisp white wines, you will love Sauvignon Blanc. It pairs well with everything from salads to seafood. We recommend the divinely good Pascal Jolivet Sancerre Blanc from Loire, France.

Red Wines

Chilean Carménère: This medium-bodied red wine originated in Bordeaux, France but now grows almost only in Chile. It is treasured for its red-and-black berry flavors and notes of green peppercorn and pairs well with nearly every type of food. Try the excellent Vina Maipo Carmenere Vitral from Chile’s Rapel Valley.

Argentinian Malbec: Malbec is cultivated and produced in large quantities in Argentina. It features a rich, full bodied taste with berry-like fruit flavors. It pairs well with poultry, roasted pork, and lean cuts of red meat.  Try the award-winning Trivento Reserve Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina.

Australian Shiraz: Shiraz is the name given to the dark-skinned Syrah grape when it’s grown in Australia. The wine has dark fruit flavors from sweet blueberry to savory black olive, a very full-bodied taste, and contains high amounts of healthy antioxidants. Pair it with bold-flavored foods. Try the award-winning Layer Cake Shiraz from South Australia.

Spanish Tempranillo: A popular Spanish varietal, Tempranillo is flavorful but not too strong. Full of delicious fruit flavors, it pairs well with grilled meats, smoky dishes, pizza, pasta and Mexican food. We recommend the Bodegas Ramiro Ramiro’s from Castilla y Leon, Spain.
