What is Craft Beer?

Craft Beer Cayman IslandsMost people define craft beer as a beer that is made in a traditional or non-mechanical way by an independent brewery, in other words, by a brewery that is not one of the big corporations. You could consider it as “crafted” rather than “manufactured.”

Cayman Islands Brewery (CIB) is an example of a local craft brewery that was launched in 2007 and is the only brewery on Grand Cayman. In that time, they have launched 10 beer brands and 3 seasonal beers. Some have won awards in the international arena, and all are favorites with Cayman locals and visitors from around the world.

Why Choose Local Craft Beer?

Here are a few of the factors that make craft beers stand out from the crowd.

  • Support Local Business: Spending money on local craft beers is a great way to support the local business and community. You are also doing your part to help the craft beer industry grow. Try Caybrew, CIB’s flagship product, which has earned an international gold medal for quality. It’s a full-bodied premium pale lager with a clean, crisp character.
  • Better Ingredients: There are 4 ingredients in the average beer: water, grains, hops, and yeast. Your local brewery, however, uses higher quality, fresher, and sometimes organic ingredients. Ironshore Bock, for example, is a full-bodied, strong and dark bock with a rich and nutty flavor that comes from specialty black, Crystal and Munich malts and hops from Washington state’s Cascade Mountains, and is brewed to 7% ABV.
  • More Variety: Craft breweries have the freedom to explore unique beer ideas. Some have “seasonals,” using in-season ingredients. Mango Tango from CIB is a great example. The popular seasonal features tropical mango and a hint of coconut that is superb on a hot Cayman day. Or try Seven Mile Wheat, a medium bodied straw-colored beer with a vibrant white cap that’s named for Grand Cayman’s iconic Seven Mile Beach.
  • Sustainability: Most craft brewers try to ply their craft in a sustainable manner. For example, CIB purifies the water they use to 99.9%, which means you’ll enjoy the freshest beer in the Caribbean. Also, 50% of their brewing process uses self-generated N2, significantly reducing their need for imported CO2 and helping to minimize their carbon footprint. The brewery’s White Tip Lager is the world’s first conservation beer. Part of the profits are donated to Cayman Marine Conservation.
