Tips for Pairing Food and Scotch

  1. Food cooked with fat generally pairs very well with Scotch.
  2. Avoid foods that are very spicy or loaded with garlic unless you want to kill the flavors in the whisky.
  3. Consider matching weights so that the flavors don’t drown each other out. A lighter whisky will usually work well with a lighter dish, such as fresh fish or sashimi. A heaver whisky will complement a more heavily flavored meal, such as beef and lamb.
  4. It may seem intuitive to match a smoky whisky with a smoked food, but one flavor may kill the other. When eating pork, for example, a whisky with a note of apple will be a good match.
  5. Some whiskies, especially cask-strength ones, may need a splash of water to work with food.

Aberlour: Pair this single malt Speyside Scotch whisky and its fine sherried spiciness with baby lamb chops, Manchego cheese, prosciutto skewers, and dark chocolate desserts.

Clynelish: This single malt coastal Highland Scotch whisky has an aroma of plums, grapes, plump barley and a hint of citrus. It pairs well with cheesy dishes as well as apple pie drizzled with caramel.

Glenkinchie: Pair this light, fruity single malt Lowland Scotch whisky with dishes made with Kalamata and Niçoise olives or roasted garlic.

Laphroaig: Considered by many to be “Best Single Malt Whisky in the World,” this peaty single malt Islay Scotch whisky is wonderful when paired with oysters, smoked salmon and sushi.
