Red Wines
- Cabernet Sauvignon: A significant grape in California, it is primarily known for its blackberry, currants, and dark cherry flavors. We recommend Cakebread Cabernet from Napa Valley.
- Merlot: Some consider Merlot as the Chardonnay of red wines. It has flavors of watermelon, strawberry, cherry and plum. Outside of France, you’ll find some delicious choices from New Zealand, such as Oyster Bay Merlot from Hawkes Bay.
- Pinot Noir: The best Pinot Noirs originate in Burgundy, France, but you may be pleasantly surprised by the choices from Oregon, such as Domaine Serene Pinot Noir, from the Willamette Valley.
- Syrah/Shiraz: Shiraz is Australia’s claim to fame, but luscious versions also come from France, California and Washington. Layer Cake Shiraz from South Australia is one of our favorites.
- Zinfandel: The best ripe, sweet black cherry flavored versions come from California. We recommend the 2014 Angry Bunch Zinfandel from Northern California.
White Wines
- Chardonnay: This popular variety grows all over the world, but some of the best come from France, Italy, California, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Try Lewis Cellars Napa Chardonnay, an excellent choice from the Napa Valley in California.
- Gewürztraminer: Germany and Alsace specialize in this spicy white wine, but you’ll find good examples from New Zealand, Oregon and California. It is very similar to Moscato and is an aromatic grape with a sweet flavor. Try Hugel Gewurztraminer from Alsace.
- Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris: Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are the same grape; one is the Italian name; the other is French. This popular variety grows all over the world, but some of the best come from France, Italy, California, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Try Ruffino Pinot Grigio from Italy.
- Sauvignon Blanc: A dry, crisp wine, Sauvignon Blanc is the benchmark white wine of New Zealand but is a major player in France, Austria, Australia, Chile and California. Try the award-winning Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand’s Marlborough region.
