Reefs, Walls, Shipwrecks — Grand Cayman Has It All

The islands that make up the Caymans are the tips of underwater mountains. With honeycombed coral formations, interconnecting tunnels, an array of corals and sponges, turtles, rays, jacks, snapper, lobsters and sharks, and crystal-clear visibility, scuba diving can’t get much better than in Grand Cayman.

USS Kittiwake

The USS Kittiwake, previously a US Navy submarine support ship with five decks and endless rooms to explore, is located near the shore of Seven Mile Beach. The water is clear enough to see the wreck from the surface and is ideal for snorkelers and people diving for the first time. Take a good flashlight and explore the ship deck by deck or snorkel from above to see 50 species of coral and more than 500 species of fish.

Babylon

Wall diving is outstanding in Grand Cayman, and this dive site along the North Wall is among the best. It is not easy to reach and is more often visited by divers on live-aboards or full-day diving safaris. There is plenty for novice divers to see on the sandy flats just before the drop-off, but descend deeper and revel in breathtaking scenery and excellent examples of black coral, giant purple sea fans and barrel sponges, as well as parrot fish, barracuda, eagle rays, green and hawksbill turtles.

Eden Rock and Devil’s Grotto

Just south of Seven Mile Beach and approximately 46 feet below the surface are the side-by-side Eden Rock and Devil’s Grotto, two of Grand Cayman’s most popular dive sites. The coral reefs rise in vertical cliff faces from a 40-foot sand bottom to within a few feet of the surface. Photographers love the light play and plentiful marine life at Devil’s Grotto. Eden Rock offers small caverns, tunnels and swim-throughs. Explore Eden Rock Diving Center in George Town for dive excursions and equipment rental.

Whether you live on Grand Cayman or just love vacationing here, the diving will leave you with fantastic memories. If you need more tips, visit a Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits store.
