About Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman HolidaysThe Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory and overseas territory of the European Union located in the western Caribbean Sea, just over one hour by air from Miami, Florida. We are located south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica.

Grand Cayman is the largest of our three Islands and the location of the territory’s colorful capital, George Town. It’s only about 22 miles long and 8 miles wide at its widest point, but packed with spectacular beaches like the famous Seven Mile Beach, amazing resorts, exhilarating scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, such as the Cayman Turtle Farm and Stingray City, and a world-famous center for offshore banking.

Grand Cayman Public Holidays

As a British Overseas Territory, visitors will find that we share a number of public holidays with our British counterparts around the world:

  • New Year’s Day (January 1)
  • National Heroes Day (January) – a day to remember national heroes
  • Ash Wednesday (First Wednesday of Lent)
  • Good Friday (Friday before Easter)
  • Easter Monday (Monday after Easter)
  • Discovery Day (May) – commemorates the sighting of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman by Christopher Columbus in 1503
  • Queen’s Birthday (June) – celebrates the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, monarch of the British Empire
  • Constitution Day (July) –commemorates the passing of the Cayman Islands’ first constitution in 1959
  • Remembrance Day (November) – commemorates the armistice agreement that ended the World War I
  • Christmas (December 25)
  • Boxing Day (December 26) – British holiday originally conceived to share gifts with the less fortunate

You will find government offices, banks and many retail stores in the Cayman Islands closed on public holidays, although most restaurants stay open. On some holidays, the hours at gas stations and supermarkets are reduced.

If you are staying in a condo or vacation villa, we strongly advise you to have groceries and your favorite beverages delivered ahead of time.
