Great Snorkeling Locations on Grand Cayman

The Cayman Islands’ crystal clear warm water, unbelievable visibility of 60 to 100 feet or more, pristine coral reefs, and marine life make it a world-class destination for snorkelers and divers.  Expect to see spotted eagle rays, moray eels, sea turtles, stingrays, and other colorful marine creatures. Here are a few recommendations for excellent places to snorkel on Grand Cayman.

Wreck of the Gamma

Located near George Town on the very southern end of Seven Mile Beach, the wreck of the Gamma is a great snorkel location. It’s just 12 feet from shore in shallow water and is easy to spot because it protrudes above the surface. The clarity of the water makes it easy to see all the marine life. There are few shipwrecks in the Cayman Islands, and this one is ideal for children, beginning snorkelers, and anyone who is not a confident swimmer.

Spotts Beach

You will discover peaceful Spotts Beach off Shamrock Road in the Spotts Newlands part of Grand Cayman, where homes and waterfront condos surround ironshore cliffs and white sand. This beach is famous for the high number of green sea turtles that swim through the shallow waters and graze on the sea grass as you snorkel. There are cabanas, benches and tables available for picnics and barbecues, and the south-facing beach is a great place to watch the sunset.

Cemetery Reef

Cemetery Beach, at the northern end of Seven Mile Beach, features some incredibly beautiful snorkeling and is most suitable for confident swimmers. Cemetery Reef is about 100 to 200 feet out from the shore. You can see many different species of brightly colored tropical fish and coral here, including snappers, jacks, sergeant majors, tangs, surgeonfish, parrotfish, turtles and stingrays.

USS Kittiwake Shipwreck & Underwater Museum

Dive or snorkel on the wreck of the USS Kittiwake, a 251-foot-long former submarine support ship that is settled in the waters off Seven Mile Beach. Following almost 50 years of active service in the US Navy, she was sunk in 2011 to serve as an artificial reef and an ocean tribute to seafarers worldwide. The water is clear enough to see the wreck from the surface and is ideal for snorkelers and people diving for the first time. Explore the ship deck by deck or snorkel from above to see 50 species of coral and more than 500 species of fish.
