Wine Guide

Grand Cayman Wine StoresThere is a lot to know about wine, and we hope the following descriptions and tips will help you decide which one to try next!

Red Wines

Cabernet Sauvignon: This is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. Usually classified as a dry wine, Cabernet Sauvignon is full bodied, high in alcohol, and bursting with flavors, including coffee, toffee, and chocolate. It pairs well with steak, beef stroganoff, short ribs, and roasted potatoes. We highly recommend the award-winning Cakebread Cabernet from California’s Napa Valley.

Merlot: Some consider Merlot to be the Chardonnay of red wines. It is the second most popular type of red wine behind Cabernet Sauvignon. A dry, full-bodied wine with flavors of watermelon, strawberry, cherry and plum, it also features soft notes of vanilla, mocha, and cloves. Merlot pairs well with chicken, fish, and lightly-spiced red meats. Give the highly rated Le Macchiole Messorio Merlot from Tuscany, Italy a try.

Pinot Noir: The best Pinot Noirs originate in Burgundy, France, but the grape has moved around the globe. Pinot Noir features strong, oaky overtones and is considered a moderately dry medium-to-light bodied wine. It pairs well with roasted duck, goose, salmon and pork. We highly recommend the superb Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir, an award-winner from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in Walker Bay, South Africa.

White Wines

Chardonnay: Chardonnay is the most planted white wine grape in the world, but California’s wines are among the most highly regarded. It has buttery aromas and spicy notes. Try Au Contraire Chardonnay from California’s Russian River Valley paired with mild cheeses, seafood, chicken, or pork.

Gewürztraminer: Germany and Alsace specialize in this spicy white wine, but you’ll find good examples from New Zealand, Oregon and California. It is very similar to Moscato and is an aromatic grape with a sweet flavor. Try Hugel Gewurztraminer from Alsace paired with spicy foods, such as Asian, Indian and Middle Eastern food.

Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris: Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are the same grape; one is the Italian name; the other is French. The wine has crisp, light, fruit flavors. In addition to Italy, France, Germany and California, it has also become the pre-eminent white wine grape from Oregon. Try Ruffino Lumina Pinot Grigio from Italy. It pairs well with seafood and pasta dishes.

Sauvignon Blanc/Fumé Blanc: Fumé Blanc is the same grape as Sauvignon Blanc. A dry, crisp wine, it is the benchmark white wine of New Zealand but is a major player in France, Austria, Australia, Chile and California. Try the award-winning Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand’s Marlborough region. Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with everything from salads to seafood.
