Wine Buying Tips

Grand Cayman WineHundreds of wines from all corners of the world are available at Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits. Let us help you get to know the flavor profiles and regions of some of our favorite red and white wine grapes.

Whites

Chardonnay: This popular grape grows all over the world, but some of the best come from France, Italy, California, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Try Au Contraire Chardonnay from California’s Russian River Valley paired with mild cheeses, seafood, chicken, or pork.

Moscato/Muscat: From one of the oldest grape families in the world, the best examples of this refreshing aromatic and floral wine come from Italy, France and Spain. Enjoy Vietti Moscato D’ Asti from Piemonte, Italy paired with seafood or cheese.

Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris: This fine white wine has crisp, light, fruit flavors. In addition to Italy, France, Germany and California, it has also become the pre-eminent white wine grape from Oregon. Try Ruffino Lumina Pinot Grigio from Italy. It pairs well with seafood and pasta dishes.

Riesling: Rieslings are among the finest light, fruity wines in the world. Some of the best come from Germany and Austria, but France, Washington, New York and Australia are close behind. Try Becker Pfalz Riesling from Pfalz, Germany. The wine pairs well with seafood and Asian foods.

Sauvignon Blanc: One of the driest, crispest white wines, this is the benchmark white wine of New Zealand. Try the award-winning Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand’s Marlborough region. Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with everything from salads to seafood.

Reds

Cabernet Sauvignon: Cabernet Sauvignon is considered one of the world’s best varieties of red wine. it is best known for its blackberry, currants, and dark cherry flavors and pairs well with red meat. Try Frank Family Napa Cabernet from Napa Valley.

Carménère: This medium-bodied red wine from Chile’s Rapel Valley is similar in body and texture to Merlot. It’s treasured for its red-and-black berry flavors, hints of coffee and spicy notes. We recommend the Vina Maipo Carmenere Vitral. Try it with roasted pork ribs.

Pinot Noir: The best Pinot Noirs originate in Burgundy, France, but you may be pleasantly surprised by the choices from Oregon, such as the exceptional Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir, an award-winner from Dundee Hills.

Syrah/Shiraz: Shiraz is Australia’s claim to fame, but luscious versions also come from France, California and Washington. The wine pairs well with spare ribs and grilled meats. Yellow Tail Shiraz from South Australia is a staff favorite.

Zinfandel: This wine is lighter in color than other reds but has a bold taste with notes of berries, sage, white pepper, and licorice. Some of the best versions come from California. We recommend Angry Bunch Zinfandel from the Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, California. Try it with salmon.
