Dining on Grand Cayman

Food on Grand Cayman can be slightly more expensive than in the U.S., but the prices are on par with those you will find on many other Caribbean islands and in other tourist destinations, such as Hawaii, but there are options here to fit all budgets.

Prices at most stores, bars and restaurants on Grand Cayman are listed in the local currency – the Cayman Islands Dollar (KYD). When paying with US Dollars, add 20% to account for the exchange rate. In other words, KYD $1.00 (or CI $1.00) is equal to USD $1.20.

If your accommodations have a kitchen, consider cooking for yourself now and then. Groceries can be found at excellent supermarkets from West End to East Bay that offer everything you could possibly need. If you need cheese to go with your wine, visit Bay Market, which offers a variety of gourmet, specialty, and organic items, as well as the largest gourmet cheese selection on Island.

Oriental Market in downtown George Town stocks Asian products from China to Thailand and, on most days, you can buy fresh fish directly from fishermen on the downtown George Town waterfront. Craving something sweet? Try Icoa Fine Foods in the Seven Mile Beach Shops, where you’ll find superb fresh pastries, scones, pain au chocolate, croissants and more.

You’ll also discover some unique dishes on Grand Cayman. For example, the Caymans are the only place in the world where you can legally eat turtle (available in the form of soup, steak and stew). Or try conch (pronounced “conk”), an edible snail with a mild, sweet clam-like flavor that can be found in soup, stew, salad and spicy fritters.

Be sure to try Cayman jerk chicken and pork that is smoked to perfection in rustic steel drum barrels. Seymour’s Jerk Centre in George Town, Red Bay Jerk Chicken in Grand Harbour, and Rankin’s Jerk Centre in Bodden Town are local favorites.
