History of the Amstel Brand
The Amstel brand of beer originally called the Netherlands home. It’s originally brewed and bottled at the Amstel Brouwerij in Amsterdam and comes as a full-strength beer or a pale lager, Amstel Light.
The brewery itself opened 150+ years ago in 1870, and the brand was named for the Amstel River. The river actually provided refrigeration for the beer during the early days of the brand.
In 1883, Amstel expanded to export into Indonesia and Great Britain and continued to expand until opening the Amstel Bavarian beer brewery in 1892.
Heineken and Amstel formed a partnership in 1941 and expanded even further followed by a buyout of Amstel by Heineken in 1968.
The brewery first established by Amstel closed four years later and production moved to Zoeterwoude where Heineken comes together.
As with other lagers, Amstel Light is characterized by light body and color, crisp flavor, a lower ABV than ale, and a various degree of sweetness. Lager beers like Amstel Light are more stable with greater storage due to the process of production.

- 1 ½ ounces lemon club soda
- 1 ounce lemon-infused syrup*
- 2 dashes lemon bitters (divided)
- 1 ½ ounces dark rum
- Amstel Light
- Lemon wedge
Instructions:
- In a cocktail shaker, add club soda, lemon syrup, one dash of lemon bitters, and dark rum.
- Add ice and shake away!
- Strain into an ice-filled glass.
- Top with Amstel Light and the other dash of bitters.
- Stir.
- Garnish with lemon wedge.
*Lemon-infused syrup preparation:
Ingredients:
- ¼ cup water
- ¼ cup sugar
- ¾ cups fresh lemon juice
Instructions:
- Add all ingredients to a saucepan.
- Bring to a boil on medium.
- Simmer until the sugar dissolves.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool.
