After the Party, Don’t Waste the Red

When you order too much red wine for a gathering, what do you do with the leftover bottles? If you love red wine, it’s a no-brainer. You drink it up!

For others, though, don’t waste the red. We’ve collected quite a few suggestions over the years to use up the leftovers before they ruin.

Make a Different Drink

So you weren’t thrilled with the wine you bought? Maybe it was sweeter than you like or maybe too dry. Instead of making yourself drink a red wine you didn’t care for, create a new cocktail from it. A Kalimotxo is a mix of red wine and dark soda. You might also make sangria, mulled wine, or various other cocktails.

Make Red Wine Vinegar

With raw apple cider vinegar, a cheesecloth, a rubber band, and a glass jar, you can transform a single red wine or a blend of red wines into red wine vinegar.

Make Salad Dressing

Take the red wine vinegar you make into a vinaigrette dressing with a bit of garlic, Dijon mustard, sea salt, pepper, and olive oil. You can also take the red wine leftover and combine it with sea salt and olive oil for a simple dressing alternative.

Enhance Baked Treats

The indulgence of red wine can be taken a mile further when added to a cake batter or glaze.

Use to Make Stew or a Sauce

A bit of red wine added to the stew brings out layers of flavor you won’t experience otherwise. A red wine reduction sauce can completely transform a weekday protein into a memorable cuisine experience.

Freeze It

In the time that the opened wine turns, you may not have time to cook. Luckily, you can use an ice tray to freeze the wine, transfer it to Ziploc bags, and remove it when you’re ready to use it later. Two tips: leave room for the wine to expand at the top of the tray, and cover it to prevent absorption of other flavors.
