Types of Rum

White/Clear Rum

Clear rum has a lighter body and milder flavor than gold and dark rums. This type of rum is typically used within mixed drinks. We offer Bacardi Light or Captain Morgan’s White.

Gold/Pale Rum

When rum ages in barrels, the color takes on an amber/golden shade. The color change is proportional to a deeper flavor, making it useful for flavorful cocktails. We encourage you to try Appleton Estate Signature Rum for a taste of classic Jamaican rum.

Dark Rum

Aged rums are frequently classified as dark, so the label can range from light amber to black. Gosling’s Black Rum is a prime example of such an option.

Black Rum

Rich, full-flavored rum provides a heavy tropical vibe to cocktails and is often used to counteract against the taste of other rums.

Navy Rum

The traditional rum with ties to the British Royal Navy is called Navy Rum. Rum became the preferred drink since it aged better on the seas than wine or brandy.

Premium Aged Rum

Fine rum aged for years in oak barrels provide a taste that is second to none. The complexity and smoothness provide a distinct profile that is clearly superior to other rums. Ron Zacapa 23 is a wonderful Premium Aged Rum to try while on Grand Cayman.

Vintage Rum

Rum is often bottled as a combination of batches, especially when made in the States, but some specialty rums have precise vintages. Rums with a vintage year usually hail from the French islands due to a shorter production season.

Overproof Rum

Overproof rums are those with concentrations of alcohol greater than 40%-50% ABV. During modern distillation, rum usually reaches 180-190 proof alcohol and is then diluted with water after the aging and blending processes.

Rhum Agricole

A specific type of rum, Rhum Agricole is a French marvel produced in the West Indies. Instead of sugarcane byproducts, the fresh juice of locally grown sugarcane is fermented, distilled, and aged. The flavor is intense, complex and quite different from the typical rum you know.

Cachaca

This type of rum must be produced in Brazil. Its flavor is spicy, sweet, and fruity with a clear color. Regulated tightly, cachaca is made from fermented sugarcane juice and contains 38%-48% ABV.

Flavored and Spiced Rum

A plethora of rums on the market offer a flavor that’s been infused with spices. These rums often bring life to holiday cocktails, rum cakes, and tropical drinks. Consider Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum!

Try any of these rum types on the Cayman Islands effortlessly by ordering them from Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits. We offer help with choosing the best rum for your palate as well as good use of your time with free delivery. .
