Our Guide to Stingray City

Stingray City and its string of shallow sandbars is one of the most popular attractions in the Caribbean. Visitors have an opportunity to observe and interact with these “gentle giants,” hold them, feed them with squid treats, and even swim alongside them.

Getting there: Stingray City is located on the North Sound of Grand Cayman and is a quick 30-minute boat ride from shore. When you arrive, a guide will tell you about the stingrays and how to interact with them safely.

About the rays: For decades, fisherman around Grand Cayman would clean their catch in the shallow waters here, and Southern Stingrays would hang around for the food. Now they’ve learned to associate the sound of boats with food and happily come around in the hope of getting a treat.

This once-in-a-lifetime experience enables you to learn about the biology and behavior of these graceful animals while observing them in their natural habitat.

Female rays can be up to 50″ across and usually prefer to stay at the surface of the water. The smaller males (about half the size) prefer to hide in the sand. Touching them feels somewhat like touching a Portobello mushroom – smooth on the bottom and like sandpaper on top.

Are they dangerous? Stingrays are docile unless they feel cornered or attacked, or when they are accidentally stepped on. Pay attention to your guide’s instructions about “shuffle walking” along the sandbar. Stings are quite rare at Stingray City.

More adventure: After your visit to Stingray City, many tour operators include snorkeling tours (equipment included) to Coral Gardens, the popular nearby coral reef that’s known for its incredible array of tropical fish, lobsters, coral formations, sponges and more, and/or the Barrier Reef, which offers some of the best shallow water snorkeling with pristine conditions and abundant marine life.

Whether you live on Island or are visiting on vacation, don’t miss the unique experiences at Stingray City in Grand Cayman. And don’t miss the convenience of having your favorite beverages delivered to your door free of charge from Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits!
