Things to Do in the Cayman Islands

Whether you live in the Cayman Islands or simply enjoy vacationing here, there are plenty of things to do that will leave you with fantastic memories.

Hit the Beach

There is no way to avoid spectacular beaches in the Cayman Islands. The largest and most popular is Seven Mile Beach, where you’ll find most of the resorts and most of the people. If you’re looking for a quieter, more peaceful, but equally beautiful stretch of sand, consider these alternatives:

  • Starfish Point: The crystal-clear water at this beach, on the northeast tip of Grand Cayman near the Kaibo Yacht Club and Restaurant, also known as Ivory Kai Point, is often full of amazing orange Cushion Starfish that gather here to feed on micro-organisms found on the seabed, depending on the season and tide. Snap photos, but don’t remove them from the water or think about keeping one (they’re protected by law, and you will risk a fine or prison time).
  • Smith Barcadere: This little beach, also known as Smith Cove, is located in a residential neighborhood in South Sound. It’s surrounded by turquoise waters protected by coral and limestone formations and is a popular swimming and snorkeling site. You’ll find public restrooms, picnic benches and outdoor showers, as well as shade under the Grape trees that frame the beach.
  • Rum Point: This expansive beach is on the north side of Grand Cayman, about 10 miles from George Town. Lounge in a hammock in the shade of the Casuarina trees or snorkel out beyond the shallow beach area, where you’ll enjoy swimming with sea turtles, sting rays, parrot fish and lobsters. And, don’t miss the Wreck Bar and Grill where you can savor authentic island cuisine and delicious cocktails.

Bioluminescent Bay

If you’re looking for a unique evening adventure, consider a kayaking tour of Grand Cayman’s Bioluminescent Bay. This amazing phenomenon which causes the sea to light up in the dark of the night is created by tiny single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates that emit light as they move in the water. Book in advance because the bioluminescent schedule follows the moon cycle.
